Effect of exogenous melatonin treatment on postharvest storage quality and physiological changes in cauliflower

Abstract

To investigate the effect of melatonin (MT) treatment on the preservation of cauliflower, this study used cauliflower as the experimental material, and used MT treatment at a concentration of 50 μmol/L, with no MT spray as the control, and then packaged in PE film and stored at 0 ℃, and measured the organoleptic quality, nutrient indexes, physiological indexes, senescence indexes, and the activity of reactive oxygen metabolism and related enzymes in the storage area for 60 days.The effect of exogenous melatonin treatment on the storage quality and physiological changes of cauliflower after harvesting was also studied.The exogenous melatonin treatment was used to study the effects of storage quality and physiological changes of cauliflower after harvesting.Results showed that the decay rate was lower in the MT treatment group, 15% at 60 days of storage, and 35% in the CK group, which was significantly higher than that in the MT treatment group (P<0.05), and that the exogenous melatonin treatment was able to better maintain the content of reducing sugars, soluble solids, vitamin C, and soluble proteins, inhibit respiration rate and ethylene production rate, delay the increase of the relative electrical conductivity, maintain peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, and inhibit the increase of polyphenol oxidase activity and the accumulation of H2O2 content.The results of this experiment can provide theoretical basis and data support for cauliflower post-harvest storage and preservation, and provide new ideas and methods for cauliflower post-harvest storage and transportation.
