Abstract

To address the limitations of starch-based films in mechanical performance and multifunctionality, this study utilized a blade coating method, incorporating carboxylated cellulose nanofiber and tea polyphenol to enhance the mechanical strength of pure starch films through network entanglement and hydrogen bond assembly.A multifunctional tea polyphenol/carboxylated cellulose nanofiber/starch composite film (SF-CNF-TP) was developed, and its structure and properties were systematically characterized. Results demonstrated that carboxylated cellulose nanofiber incorporation improved the mechanical performance by 2.47-fold in toughness value, with a particularly remarkable 1.14-fold increase in elongation at break. The addition of tea polyphenol further improved the tensile strength of carboxylated cellulose nanofiber/starch composite films while successfully endowing them with good UV-shielding, antioxidant, and antibacterial capabilities.SF-CNF-TP demonstrated nearly 100% UV absorption capacity in the ultraviolet region and exhibited significant antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium). Soil degradation tests and bean sprout growth experiments confirmed the composite films’ biodegradability and biosafety. These findings collectively demonstrate the application potential of SF-CNF-TP as sustainable packaging materials.
