Mixed fermentation of Candida utilis and Lactobacillus plantarum and its water purification effect

Abstract

A microbiological agent named EM12 was consisted of Candida utilis and Lactobacillus plantarum. Single factor experiments and orthogonal-design experiments were applied to optimize its liquid- and solid-state mixed fermentation technology, followed by examining the water purification efficiencies of the fermented products. The results showed that under the optimized liquid-state medium and fermentation conditions, the densities of L. plantarum and C. utilis reached up to 6.70×109 CFU/mL and 2.00×107 CFU/mL, respectively. Moreover, with the optimal solid-state medium, the densities of L. plantarum and C. utilis reached up to 1.64×1010 CFU/g and 1.65×108 CFU/g, respectively. The efficiencies of removing 45.0 mg/L nitrite from simulated sewage by solid and liquid microbial inoculums were 100% and 89.8%, respectively. Mixed fermentation of L. plantarum and C. utilis not only increased the concentration of effective live bacteria, but also ensured their water purification effects, which provides theoretical basis and support for applying these compounded microbial inoculums in aquaculture.
