Abstract

ACA microcapsule with liquid core (LCM) was prepared for studying the diffusion coefficient of low molecular weight substances and determining molecular mass cut-off (MMCO) of the membrane. The growth of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied, which were encapsulated into LCM and solid core ACA(SCM).Free cell culture was used as control. The behavior of cell glucose consumption and ethanol production were determined. The result shows that the diffusion coefficients (mm/min) for low molecular weight substances to ingress though the LCM were 0.0126 for glutamic acid,0.0110 for L-phenylalanine,0.0071 for glucose and 0.0049 for lactose. The MMCO is 2000.Microencapsulated cells with LCM has higher growth rate than that with SCM.Ethanol production in batch culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encapsulated into LCM maintain high rate.
