Nutritional and chemical composition, in vitro antioxidant and skincare activities of Rosa ‘Crimson Glory'

Abstract

This study comprehensively analyzed the nutritional and chemical components in the petals of Yunnan-produced Rosa ‘Crimson Glory' and investigated the impact of different ethanol volume fractions on its active components and functional activities.Results revealed that Rosa ‘Crimson Glory' petals are abundant in protein, fat, total sugars, vitamin C, and mineral elements, emphasizing their significant nutritional value.The ethanol volume fraction significantly influenced the content and functional activities of the main active components in Rosa ‘Crimson Glory'.The 50% ethanol extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content, while the 100% ethanol extract showed the highest total flavonoid content.Antioxidant assays revealed that the 100% ethanol extract demonstrated superior DPPH free radical and ABTS cationic radical scavenging abilities, with the 50% ethanol extract displaying the highest ferric-reducing ability of plasma.Moreover, extracts with varying ethanol concentrations exhibited elevated antioxidant activities compared to butylated hydroxytoluene.Furthermore, the 100% ethanol extract exhibited the strongest tyrosinase inhibitory ability, indicating its promising skincare properties.The content of 12 flavonoids and anthocyanins in extracts of different ethanol concentrations was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which confirmed that the levels of these compounds were highest in the 100% and 50% ethanol extracts, thus supporting the results of antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition capacities.Correlation analysis implicated the antioxidant and skincare effects of Rosa ‘Crimson Glory' from the synergistic actions of various active ingredients.This research could provide a theoretical foundation for the further utilization of Rosa ‘Crimson Glory' in the realms of food, skincare products, and medicine.
