Study on mineral elements, total polyphenol, naringin content, and antioxidant activity in different parts of six pomelo cultivars

Abstract

The contents of mineral elements, total polyphenol, naringin, and antioxidant activities from different parts (flavedo, mediopellis, segment membrane, juice sac) of 6 pomelo cultivars [Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr. cv. Shatian yu, Citrus grandis (Linn) Osbeckl. cv. Siji yu, Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Bairoumi yu, Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Hongroumi yu, Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Sanhongmi yu, and Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Huangroumi yu] were researched by comparative study. The contents of total polyphenol, naringin, and mineral elements were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric, HPLC method, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and so on. Antioxidant activities of 95% ethanol extracts from different parts of pomelo were evaluated by methods of DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS cationic radical scavenging, and Prussian blue. Results showed that the mineral elements content of calcium [(25 349.50±1.03) μg/g] and magnesium [(14 704.50±1.08) μg/g] were highest in flavedo parts of Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Sanhongmi yu. The part with the highest content of total phenols was in the flavedo of Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Hongroumi yu, (6.14±0.31) mg GA/g DW, and the part with the highest content of naringin was in the mediopellis of Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Hongroumi yu, (11.95±0.06) mg/g DW. The antioxidant potency composite (APC) index showed that the highest antioxidant activity of flavedo was in Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.cv.Hongroumi yu and the highest antioxidant activity of the other parts were both in Citrus grandis (Linn) Osbeckl. cv. Siji yu. ABTS cationic radical scavenging activity had an extremely significant positive correlation with the content of total polyphenol and naringin (P<0.01). This research provides a reference for the reasonable development and utilization of pomelo resources and quality evaluation systems.
