Abstract

Perilla is an important medicinal and edible plant in China. It has a high edible and medicinal value with a long history of application. Perilla leaves are the most commonly used part that is rich in many nutrients such as protein, minerals, and vitamins. In addition, Perilla leaves are an excellent source of phytochemicals, including terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenylpropanoids, which have attracted much attention attributable to their antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor biological activities. This paper focused on a review of the bioactive components and pharmacological effects of Perilla frutescens based on the domestic and international literature on Perilla leaves in the past 20 years to provide a reference for the rational development and comprehensive application of Perilla leaves in the food, medicine and cosmetics fields.
